The White House sent the right message on the unfathomable tragedy, the horrific earthquake in Haiti which has left untold tens of thousands dead and missing. Read this one for their reaction: Pat Robertson Haiti Reactions: Rachel Maddow, Haitian Ambassador, Valerie Jarrett Slam Remarks (Huffington Post)
The most courageous and correct response has, admirably I think (and I’m a cynical SOB) come from President Obama, who remarked, “This is one of those moments that calls out for American leadership.”
True, that.
And not just because we owe a moral, ethical and historical debt to the Haitian people, who have helped us when we were in need. We also have a legal debt to Haiti.
Does anyone remember the Monroe Doctrine?

GLENN BECK stirring up the pot for the Big Revolt
This is the title of a thread on the White Nationalist (WN: read, “racist”) social networking site, StormFront.org, which I’ve made a recent habit of watching for gems of insight into the relationship between racism and right-wing-nut extremism.
The thread started on Aug. 12, 2009 at the build-up to the 9/12 Tea Party protests in Washington. As I blogged earlier, Tea Party astroturf organizations were actively recruiting on StormFront.org all summer on a dedicated thread for Tea Parties (still there). As I also highlighted that most of these WNs felt that a movement is brewing that will result in (a) Civil War II, (b) Revolution, (c) Secession, or (d) some combination thereof.
The talk is growing. The Tea Party thread isn’t the most popular thread on the site (137 posts, right now), but the Glenn Beck “Big Revolt” thread is, with 30,784 views and 800 posts. The questions posed in the first post by StormFront’s mediator, and which elicited such a voluminous response,

This one’s interesting just because it’s so X-Files. First, check out this website:
American Police Force – Private Investigators Information Orange County, CA
Weird, huh?
What’s weirder is the whole story. First a Montana newspaper, then Raw Story, then The Muckraker (TPM) picked up on the fact that this corporation is going build a training facility in Harding, Montana, and possibly take over policing the town.
Read the whole story on TPM.
It’s been in the news lately, so I probably don’t have to point out that the right-wing rhetoric is getting ugly. As part of the Crazy Files, I keep tabs on some really far out rhetoric, but what I’ve been finding lately is over the top. A report from the Secret Service agrees: threats to the POTUS are up 400 percent from Bush’s time in office, and too much of it has racist overtones.
Other posts on the Scary Files have made note of this trend, but I keep finding more. Most of it’s just ugly hate speech that’s not worth repeating. But the calls and prophesies for civil war and revolution — or even a military coup — are the ugliest, and are worth watch-dogging.
Here’s a few would-be generals in the coming race war/civil war/revolution against the socialist/Marxist/fascist/Nazi Obama armed civilian Youth Corps. As always, click at your own risk:
“The Coming Civil War” — YouTube video posted by a group called NARLO and billed as “a prediction of events if America stays on the path it now treads”. The good part starts around 4 min. 30 sec.

Thirty-five percent of New Jersey conservative voters think Obama may be the Anti-Christ (ThinkProgress)
A new Public Policy Polling survey of New Jersey voters has some shocking results: 21 percent either believe or aren’t sure that President Obama is the Anti-Christ. Twenty-nine percent of Republicans and 35 percent of “conservative” voters also either believe he is or aren’t sure.

“National Socialism is, above all things, the doctrine that it is not only for the good of humanity but absolutely essential for the survival of humanity that scientific method be applied not only to the breeding of animals and bugs but also to the breeding of human beings.” — National Socialist Party web site
“Most of us will agree that government is a necessary evil, to be feared and distrusted. Here we have common ground with those citizens involved in the ongoing Tea Party activism. Tea Party activism is not racial activism, but all those participating are equally despised by the powerful ruling elite …. Where we share principled common interest with other good folk it is imperative to join with them in pursuit of that interest.” — ‘Jack Boot’, editor of white nationalist web site, Stormfront.org

With all the “disruptions” (sounds like a Peter Parker line) at town halls recess meetings across the country — the guns and fisticuffs and mobs — it isn’t surprising to also learn that militias are growing, as if waiting for a spark to ignite a race war. Maybe this last statement is unfair. Town hall protest organizers claim their Tea Bagging brigades are bipartisan, and that all the Nazi-talk and swastikas is just a fringe element of their crowds. But what about that fringe element — what’s their endgame? For insight (sic) I surfed by Stormfront.org, the white nationalist web site.
I found this interesting thread: “On the verge of civil war in America?”
As one might expect, there weren’t many reasoned responses to this question, but here was one particularly… er… interesting one, by “White Tribesman”:
Re: On the verge of civil war in America?
Racially conscious Whites will NEVER, never ever, take back the United States of America. A racially conscious White man (or woman) will never be elected President. No one in Washington is ever going to reverse the demographic decline of the White race. Liberal White race-traitors from New York will never abandon

Occasionally it’s worth waiting for a story to develop before blogging it. Watch a pattern develop, first, then provide a more comprehensive resource to assemble the big picture out of the many pieces.
This town hall mob story is a prime example — definitely one for the Crazy Files. There’s so many angles to it that it’s easy to get lost in the forest for all the trees. As a panacea, we’ve compiled a series of excerpts, broken into six posts, that help to illustrate the web of events and their underlying linkage (to be updated as this madness unfolds):
The Town Hall Mobs:
Police Break Up Screaming Crowd Outside Tampa Town Hall On Health Care Reform (Huffington Post)
Angry protesters screamed, yelled and banged on windows as officers hurried to guard the entrances to the facility, where U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor was trying to discuss the various health care reform proposals being debated in Congress. One photojournalist said that a fistfight broke out inside the building, reports WTSP.
Many of the hundreds of protesters said that they had been inspired by a conservative activist group promoted by Fox News host

Why all the violence and disruption at the Democratic town hall meetings? It’s pretty clear that, in part, the anti-health care protesters have been whipped into a frenzy by fear-mongering by conservatives and their media minions. The usual right-wing-nuts are out in force, arguing that Obama’s health care plan includes mandatory euthanasia, that it’s socialist or communist, and that it’s akin to Nazism — among other certifiable accusations. Following is a round-up of some of the crazy stories that made it into the Scary Files.
The Fear-Mongering:
Gingrich Defends Palin’s Obama “Death Panel” Claim (Huffington Post)
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich defended the bizarre claim by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin that the president’s health care plan would result in a “death panel” that could kill her Down Syndrome son….
Palin posted a message on her Facebook account warning that “death panels” would be set up to encourage euthanasia — a wild and baseless complaint that has grown popular in conservative circles.
“The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their

All that fear-mongering begs the question: Who’s behind all this minority-party bullying? Is it a grass-roots movement, as the town hall mobsters would like us to believe? Or is there some nefarious plot by GOP organizations to turn out the wing-nuts by feeding them insane misinformation? It turns out to be the latter, as the following excerpts demonstrate.
The Astroturfing:
FreedomWorks Distributes False Talking Points On Health Insurance Reform (Media Matters)
On August 5, 2009, FreedomWorks released an action kit for its astroturfing work during the August recess. This packet contains misinformation not only on health insurance reform but also cap-and-trade. Clearly lacking facts that support their claims, FreedomWorks is resorting to fear mongering to activate their members.
CEO Urges Employees To Send Emails Against Health-Care Reform (TPMMuckraker)
Employees of Express Scripts, a St. Louis-based pharmacy benefit manager that’s ranked 115 in Fortune’s rankings of America’s largest corporations, on Monday received an email from the firm’s CEO, George Paz. Titled “Take Action: Your Voice Matters on Healthcare Reform,” the email, obtained by TPMmuckraker, denounces the “rush to pass legislation that could fundamentally alter our current system without a full understanding of the costs and consequences of those changes.”
It then directs employees to
