Torture architect John Yoo, it turns out, is an evil motherfucker. The DOJ report on the infamous torture memos includes this frightening excerpt:
Yoo: ‘Sure,’ The President Could Order A Village Of Civilians Massacred (TPMMuckraker)
An investigator for the Office of Professional Responsibility asked Yoo “to explain how the torture statute would interfere with the President’s war making abilities.” Here’s the exchange that followed, which is quoted in the OPR report and was first caught by Michael Isikoff at Newsweek:
Q: I guess the question I’m raising is, does this particular law really affect the President’s war-making abilities ….Yoo: Yes, certainly.
Q: What is your authority for that?
Yoo: Because this is an option that the President might use in war.
Q: What about ordering a village of resistants to be massacred? … Is that a power that the president could legally–
Yoo: Yeah. Although, let me say this. So, certainly, that would fall within the commander-in-chief’s power over tactical decisions.
Q: To order a village of civilians to be [exterminated]?
Yoo: Sure.
We (meaning I) here at Scary Files have been wondering when the cry for secession by many among the white supremacists would start being taken more seriously by the tea-baggers and those who are tea-bagged by them (like Gov. Perry of Texas, who floated the idea, along with Chuck Norris, a couple times). See here, here, here, here, here, and here (and then some).
It’s an old meme among militant racists: there’s no way to win a civil war or revolution against the U.S. military-industrial-complex. Can’t win a revolution because that would mean capturing the hearts and minds of Americans, who are increasingly tolerant. The only viable option is secession, so — as the Southern Poverty Law Center and other watchdog groups have been warning for a while, now — the plan is to concentrate in certain areas and agitate for secession. With Obama as POTUS, the rhetoric, and the concomitant action, is seriously heating up.
A couple developments are worth blogging about. First, there’s this excerpt from Tea Partier Suggests Secession As Antidote to ‘Tyranny Of National Government’ (TPMMuckraker):
The email newsletter of North Carolina Freedom Project contains an

Conyers Slams Authors Of Torture Memos, Announces Hearings (TPMMuckraker)
The long awaited DOJ report on the OLC torture memos has been released, prompting Rep. Conyers (D-MI) to announce hearings:
“For years, those who approved torture and abuse of detainees have hidden behind legal memos issued by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel,” Conyers said. “The materials released today make plain that those memos were legally flawed and fundamentally unsound, and may have been improperly influenced by a desire to tell the Bush White House and the CIA what it wanted to hear.
“The Office of Legal Counsel has a proud tradition of providing independent, high quality legal advice to the executive branch,” Conyers continued. “The materials released today make clear that the lawyers who wrote the torture memos did not live up that tradition. While the Department ultimately concluded that the lawyers did not breach their minimum professional obligations, I certainly hold top lawyers at OLC to a higher standard than that, as all Americans should.
“Given the serious nature of the issues raised in this report, the Committee intends to hold hearings on these matters in the very near future.”
Abu Zubaydah Attorney On Thiessen Hire: It ‘Really Angers Me’ (Huffington Post)
In an article Mickum submitted to the Guardian — which was reviewed and vetted by the CIA prior to publication — Mickum made note of the fact that Abu Zubaydah’s starring role in the cases of many other detainees was being left on the cutting room floor, and that cases built on the back of connections to Abu Zubaydah were being dropped:
More importantly, the government is conducting a surreptitious but systematic purging of any reference to my client from the charge sheets and factual returns of other prisoners whose cases were being prosecuted. Abu Zubaydah has been linked to nearly 50 prisoners and former prisoners through media accounts and official Guantanamo Bay documents. Of these, approximately two dozen have either had their charges dropped or have been released from custody, including British resident Binyam Mohamed, who was recently released to British authorities without any charges. Before charges were dropped against Binyam Mohamed, Sufyian Barhoumi, Ghassan al-Sharbi and Jabran Sard al-Qahtani, each had their charge sheets redrafted to remove every reference to Abu Zubaydah.
Internationally, several individuals alleged to have known Abu Zubaydah have had their charges dropped, been

The White House sent the right message on the unfathomable tragedy, the horrific earthquake in Haiti which has left untold tens of thousands dead and missing. Read this one for their reaction: Pat Robertson Haiti Reactions: Rachel Maddow, Haitian Ambassador, Valerie Jarrett Slam Remarks (Huffington Post)
The most courageous and correct response has, admirably I think (and I’m a cynical SOB) come from President Obama, who remarked, “This is one of those moments that calls out for American leadership.”
True, that.
And not just because we owe a moral, ethical and historical debt to the Haitian people, who have helped us when we were in need. We also have a legal debt to Haiti.
Does anyone remember the Monroe Doctrine?

GLENN BECK stirring up the pot for the Big Revolt
This is the title of a thread on the White Nationalist (WN: read, “racist”) social networking site, StormFront.org, which I’ve made a recent habit of watching for gems of insight into the relationship between racism and right-wing-nut extremism.
The thread started on Aug. 12, 2009 at the build-up to the 9/12 Tea Party protests in Washington. As I blogged earlier, Tea Party astroturf organizations were actively recruiting on StormFront.org all summer on a dedicated thread for Tea Parties (still there). As I also highlighted that most of these WNs felt that a movement is brewing that will result in (a) Civil War II, (b) Revolution, (c) Secession, or (d) some combination thereof.
The talk is growing. The Tea Party thread isn’t the most popular thread on the site (137 posts, right now), but the Glenn Beck “Big Revolt” thread is, with 30,784 views and 800 posts. The questions posed in the first post by StormFront’s mediator, and which elicited such a voluminous response,

This one’s interesting just because it’s so X-Files. First, check out this website:
American Police Force – Private Investigators Information Orange County, CA
Weird, huh?
What’s weirder is the whole story. First a Montana newspaper, then Raw Story, then The Muckraker (TPM) picked up on the fact that this corporation is going build a training facility in Harding, Montana, and possibly take over policing the town.
Read the whole story on TPM.
It’s been in the news lately, so I probably don’t have to point out that the right-wing rhetoric is getting ugly. As part of the Crazy Files, I keep tabs on some really far out rhetoric, but what I’ve been finding lately is over the top. A report from the Secret Service agrees: threats to the POTUS are up 400 percent from Bush’s time in office, and too much of it has racist overtones.
Other posts on the Scary Files have made note of this trend, but I keep finding more. Most of it’s just ugly hate speech that’s not worth repeating. But the calls and prophesies for civil war and revolution — or even a military coup — are the ugliest, and are worth watch-dogging.

Thirty-five percent of New Jersey conservative voters think Obama may be the Anti-Christ (ThinkProgress)
A new Public Policy Polling survey of New Jersey voters has some shocking results: 21 percent either believe or aren’t sure that President Obama is the Anti-Christ. Twenty-nine percent of Republicans and 35 percent of “conservative” voters also either believe he is or aren’t sure.
